Project

MARMOT aims to empower communities affected by pollution or other human rights violations by providing a curated selection of tools and educational material to enable adults to carry out independent monitoring and become actors of change.

Summary of the Project

Communities living in polluted or disadvantaged areas—whether due to industrial activities, resource extraction, warfare, or other disruptive forces—often struggle to access independent data on environmental damage and human rights violations. The MARMOT project seeks to overcome these barriers by providing accessible, reliable, and user-centric citizen science tools.

Our Mission

To democratize environmental monitoring by providing user-centric, accessible, and scientifically robust tools. We work alongside local populations to bridge the knowledge-action gap, turning shared environmental concerns into collective, evidence-based interventions.

HOW WE WORK

Methodology

Despite the potential of Community-Based Monitoring, citizens often face significant barriers. Our methodology is built systematically to dismantle these obstacles through four core pillars.

Unified Platform

Citizens currently invest too much time locating tools across fragmented sources. We provide a single access point.

Language Accessibility

We provide all materials and tools in 6 languages overcoming the English barrier.

User-Centric Design

Unlike other citizen science tools designed solely by academics, our resources are co-created with end-users.

Embedded Education

We provide autonomous educational material alongside every tool to ensure effective independent use.

Impact & Targets

MARMOT’s target groups span local residents, environmental NGOs, public health and human rights advocates, and academic researchers.

By aligning their efforts, we generate a multi-layed impact on society. 

  • Enable citizens to independently map and monitor pollution sources.

  • Create legally and scientifically defensible datasets for advocacy.

  • Reduce disparities in access to environmental justice across EU borders.

  • Foster cross-border networks of Practice Communities for shared learning.
